Currency – Change – Handicrafts

What currency do you use in Mexico?
  • The official currency is the Mexican peso. You can use weights, dollars or euros.
  • The most advisable thing is, whenever possible, to do it with the official currency of the country, and the least recommended in euros. Credit and debit cards are generally accepted in large businesses.
  • They can be used to make payments and to withdraw money from ATMs.
  • The money they give you will always be Mexican pesos. However, small businesses often require cash purchases. We find the tickets in 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 pesos format. The coins come with a value of 10 and 50 cents, and 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 pesos.
  • Banks are open from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. They close the holidays and Saturdays. Most are located in Playa del Carmen, Avenida 10 and Avenida Juarez, and usually have an ATM..
Where can I change money?

In exchange houses, banks or airports give a very low change. We recommend waiting to get to Riviera Maya because here you will find it at a much higher value.

If you have the opportunity to go, the ideal is Playa del Carmen, on 5th Avenue there are many exchange houses at a great price. Another option would be in hotels, these offer change but the value will be a little lower than Playa del Carmen.

As a last option is to withdraw directly from the cashier, you will be given pesos. You have to take into account the nightgown of your bank for the retirement and evaluate if it is an option for you.

Where can I buy handicrafts?

Whoever plans to go shopping, Playa del Carmen has a wide range of possibilities in terms of merchandise to acquire. But if what you want is something original and 100% made in Mexico, we recommend the artisans of the Chichen Itza archaeological zone. That’s where most of the handicrafts that are sold in both Yucatan and Quintana Roo come from.
